Blog entry for January 17, 2009

Last week was yet another milestone week for Friday Harbour. The ZETA Cares team (www.zetainteractive.com) walked us through the site-map for our upcoming Website. It is exciting to see them put so much energy and effort into their research and development. It will sure to result in a great information and action portal for Friday Harbour.
We also recruited two outstand new volunteer leaders from the www.Burzynski Clinic.com here in Houston. I’m pleased to announce that Catherine Sanaboune and Jenny Camp have joined Friday Harbour team. Their roles will be defined later this week. We look forward to them sharing their expertise in assisting patients and their families during the cancer treatment journey.
NEW: Starting this week. You will begin to see blog postings from our Friday Harbour members, as we each tell you a little bit about ourselves…and why we chose to work with Friday Harbour. This will be call Friday Harbour & ME. We welcome your comments and suggestions as well.
Talk to you next Sunday…in the meantime, feel free to contact me at brian.hall@fridayharbour.org

January 10, 2009
Our focus is on Fundraising, Volunteers and Housing.
HAPPY HOURS: Today was a great workday for Friday Harbour. We welcomed Pam Davis to our team as our Joanna Malach has put together our monthly calendar of happy hours. The first one will be Friday January 29th at Pearl Bar on Washington Avenue. Our second HH will be on February 26th at Coffee Groundz. Be on the look out for Tweets and Facebook invites as we work to pack the house at Pearl Bar and Coffee Groundz to raise lots of money for Friday Harbour. We have true friends in Cheryl Crider at Pearl Bar and J.R. Cohen at Coffee Groundz. We can’t thank them enough for her support of Friday Harbour.
In addition to the HH Fundraisers, we will be having Live It Big festival again this year, as well as a Car Wash and an Air Hockey Tournament. Stay tuned for more information soon.
RECRUITMENT: We have a goal of 100 volunteers for Friday Harbour this year. We will have a heavy activities calendar this year. So we will need volunteers that can take on specific tasks and rolls on an as-needed basis. We will also need volunteers to attend Friday Harbour Fundraisers and other charity events. Be on the lookout for additional communications about our needs. Or simply give me a call at 888-581-4808 to find out more.
HOUSING: Our Housing committee is looking for assistance. We need folks who either work in the hospitality or housing industry to help us build our housing program. Our goal is to have 365 consecutive nights of housing available to Friday Harbour by the 4th quarter of 2010.
WEBSITE: We continue to work with ZETA Cares in the development of our NEW and EXCITING website. We expect to launch it later this year. It is sure to be our “one-stop” shop for all things Friday Harbour.

December 6, 2009

Had a great conversation this past Friday with Anthony Onesta, Vice President of ZETA Interactive. It is hard to believe that they are just as excited as we are to be chosen as their “first” charity to work with. Tony informed me that their charitable arm; ZETA Cares has committed to providing Friday Harbour with the same level of service that they provide to their corporate partners.
I am pleased that he provided that clarity during our phone conversation. It’s not that I expected anything less. It is just good to see that he thought enough of us to offer that clarity upfront. We also discussed the mutual desire and expectation to lean on each others’ organization to provide some type of press release that reflect each groups commitment to making a difference in the charitable world. He described ZI as a group that “keeps it simple” and “direct”.
He is due to send me some additional information via email that will describe their offerings to Friday Harbour. He will also include some legal documentation that is only appropriate when two organizations agree to work together.

I sense that FH will be offered a comprehensive program that will catapult our media presence into a new zone. I’m worried if we will be ready for this? I’m not scared, just worried.

My desire is to put this project into the hands of Sean Stoner and Michiel Oosterling. I expect that FH needs to take advantage of all that ZI has to offer us, understanding that some or most of it may be “future” advantaged.

CONTENT: at this point, I expect the project to yield us exceptional: 1)exceptional web presence, 2)interactive media opps with our volunteers, donors, charities, sponsors and businesses.

Some Questions:

–How do we involve the hospitals, charities, donors

–What does FH need to have in place to fully take advantage of what ZI has to offer?

–How do/should we measure the impact of your services to FH?

–How do we integrate the housing inventory database into this system.

ACTIONS:

–Who should be involved in this strategy.

–Map out the expected journey.

NEEDS:

–Control over our contacts. Why we have them. What they’ve done for FH. Opportunities. Track their journey through the charity.

–Ability to interact, connect to other charities, sponsors and donors.

–Ability to monitor visits to website.

–Match FH to possible donors, charities, Foundations, patients.

December 3, 2009

This installment comes early on Thursday evening. We were fortunate to be the chosen charity for ZETA Interactive out of Manhattan NY to be their Charity for 2010. Anthony Onesto from Zeta Interactive phoned me to let me know that Friday Harbour was chosen to be their ZETA Charities choice to provide digital media support to as we build our charity. I’m totally excited about the possibilities surrounding what is to be our breakout year for 1) awareness, 2) fundraising, and 3) volunteering.

Also, today Deborah Neville and I made a trip to the United Way offices on Waugh. While there, we took great advantage of their Foundation and Grants database. Debbie spent much of our time looking through the system and began mapping out a way for us to raise $100k during the 2010 year.

Ran into Shawn Walker at the airport during my “3hour” delay/missed flights. The Walkers and their friends are heading to Puerto Vallarta for the weekend. His bud is a Surgeon in the Texas Medical Center and truly appreciates what Friday Harbour is trying to do for patients there. Their idea is to have us develop a volunteer program to help kids, like theirs, to handle the volunteer/hard work to help our charity do it real work.

Idea: maybe find an abandoned apartment community in the Medical Center that can be used to house our patients and their families.
